Passing target: 80% (28/35)
You drive 50 mph on a dry highway behind another car. By Oregon's guidance, what is the smallest following distance that you should keep?
A follows B on a dry two-lane highway. A roadside post provides a fixed reference point, and the card states that A travels at 50 mph. No required following time appears in the question.
Correct answer: 4 seconds or more, since you are above 30 mph
Why
The faster you go, the less time you have to see a hazard, judge it and react, and the longer it takes to stop. A gap of 4 seconds or more gives you time to decide and act at highway speed, and a better view of the road ahead. Add even more time on wet roads, when it is hard to see, behind motorcycles or bicycles, or when you pull a trailer.
