Passing target: 80% (28/35)
Your engine starts to lose power while you drive in the right lane of a freeway. What should you do?
Blue car A is still moving in the right of two freeway lanes. The paved shoulder to its right is clear. A white card states that the engine starts to lose power.
Correct answer: Signal, move onto the right shoulder or an emergency stopping area, and turn on hazard lights.
Why
Freeway traffic is fast, so a car with trouble must leave the travel lanes as soon as it safely can. After you stop, remain in or close to your vehicle, on the side away from passing traffic, because walking along a freeway is dangerous. Oregon law allows a stop on a freeway only when a disabled vehicle cannot avoid it, so the shoulder is for emergencies and not for routine stops.
