It is 2 p.m. on a dark, cloudy day. Heavy rain and road spray make it hard to see, and you cannot clearly see cars that are more than about 600 feet ahead on a straight highway. What does Oregon law say about your headlights?
A travels on a straight two-lane highway in heavy afternoon rain. Slanted rain streaks and gray road spray hide distant lane markings; the card says cars cannot be seen clearly beyond about 600 feet at 2 p.m.
Correct answer: Turn them on now, because you cannot clearly see vehicles 1,000 feet ahead.
Why
In bad weather, headlights do more than help you see: they let other drivers see you early. A gray car in heavy rain can be very hard to see without lights, even at midday. The manual also advises turning on your headlights whenever your windshield wipers are on, which is an easy habit to remember.
