Passing target: 80% (28/35)
You are driving on a two-lane highway. A car behind you moves into the oncoming lane to pass you. An oncoming truck is still far ahead. What should you do?
In a not-to-scale overview, A travels left in its lane and B moves into the opposing lane to pass. Truck C travels toward B. A separate card states that the truck is still far ahead.
Correct answer: Stay to the right and ease off your speed, if needed, so the car can move back in sooner.
Why
A pass on a two-lane road is safe only while the passing car has room ahead of the oncoming traffic. If you speed up or drift left, you keep that car in the oncoming lane for longer, and a head-on crash becomes more likely. Oregon law requires you to give way to the right and not to increase speed until the pass is complete, and it prohibits a flash of your lights as a "go ahead" signal.
