Passing target: 80% (28/35)
On a two-lane road, an oncoming car drifts over the center line into your lane. There is a wide, open shoulder on your right. What should you do?
Oncoming silver B has crossed the center lines into blue A’s lane on a two-lane road. A wide paved shoulder is clear on A’s right.
Correct answer: Slow down, warn the other driver with your horn or lights, and steer as far to the right as you safely can.
Why
A head-on collision is one of the most severe types of crash, because the speeds of both vehicles add together. When a vehicle drifts toward you, move away from its path to the right, reduce your speed, and use your horn or lights to get the driver's attention. The Oregon manual says that, in most cases, going onto the shoulder or even into a ditch is safer than a head-on crash.
