You face a flashing red light at an intersection. The cross street has a flashing yellow light. A car on the cross street is close to the intersection. What should you do?
Blue car A approaches a stop line while silver car B approaches from the cross street. The signal details show flashing red for A and flashing yellow for B, identified by lamp position, broken lamp outlines and text.
Correct answer: Stop, and then let the car on the cross street pass before you go.
Why
A flashing red light means that you stop exactly as at a STOP sign, and a flashing yellow light means slow down and go on with care. When the two are used together, the driver who faces the flashing red must yield. At a railroad crossing, flashing red lights have a stronger meaning: stop, and do not go until the signals stop and no train is coming.
