You wait in a left-turn lane. The signal shows a steady red light and a green arrow that points left. A pedestrian who started on the WALK signal is still in the crosswalk of the street you will turn into. What should you do?
A waits behind the stop line in a northbound left-turn lane. Its signal detail shows a steady circular red light and a green left arrow; pedestrian B is in the crosswalk across the street A would enter.
Correct answer: Turn left, but first yield to the pedestrian in the crosswalk.
Why
During a green arrow, oncoming traffic is stopped by a red light, so your turn is protected from that traffic. People who are still finishing a crossing, and vehicles that are still clearing the intersection, keep the right-of-way. If the arrow ends and a circular green light comes on, you may still turn left, but you must then also yield to oncoming traffic.
