You park facing downhill on a street with a curb. Your car has an automatic transmission. You will stop the engine and take the key. Which other steps secure the car?
A is parked facing downhill beside the right curb. A side profile shows the slope; the card states that the car is automatic and the driver will stop the engine and take the key. No wheel setting is selected.
Correct answer: Shift to Park, set the parking brake, and turn the front wheels to the right, toward the curb.
Why
A parked car that rolls away can hit people and other vehicles. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. 3701) requires you to stop the engine, remove the key, and put the transmission in a position that resists movement. On a grade, you must also set the brake and turn the front wheels to the curb or the side of the road. The manual says: downhill, turn the wheels fully to the right, with or without a curb.
