On a rural two-lane road with no shoulder, you must stop on the roadway for a short time. You are not in a business or residence district. Which place meets Pennsylvania's rule for this stop?
A close view shows blue car A on a rural roadway with no shoulder. The card states that the stop is outside a business or residence district; no stopping place or long-distance sightline has been selected.
Correct answer: A straight, level part of the road where drivers can see the car from 500 feet each way.
Why
On rural roads, traffic moves fast, and drivers need time to see a stopped vehicle and go around it. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. 3351) says that outside a business or residence district, you must not stop on the roadway when you can stop off it. If you must stop on the roadway, leave a clear width for other traffic and make sure that drivers can see your vehicle from 500 feet in each direction. Also turn on your four-way flashers.
