You pass a slower car on the left. When does the Rhode Island manual say that it is safe to return to the right lane?
A has overtaken slower car B using the opposing lane of a two-lane road. Both cars face east. A is ahead of B but has no selected return path or mirror clearance cue in the question image.
Correct answer: When you can see the passed car's tires on the pavement in your inside mirror.
Why
Rhode Island law requires a passing driver to keep a safe distance and not to return to the right until safely clear of the passed vehicle. On a two-lane road you must also be back in your lane before you come within 100 feet of an oncoming vehicle. Signal right before you return, and cancel the signal after.
