On a two-lane road, the car ahead of you stops to turn left. The only way around it on the right is the gravel shoulder. May you pass on the right?
A follows stopped car B on a two-lane road. B is near a left-side street and intends to turn left. A tan gravel shoulder lies beyond the white pavement edge on the right; there is no paved passing lane there.
Correct answer: No, because you would have to leave the paved main part of the road.
Why
Rhode Island allows passing on the right only when the vehicle ahead turns left, or on a one-way street or a roadway for one direction of traffic (for example, one side of a divided highway) that is free of obstructions and wide enough for two or more lanes. Even then, you must stay on the pavement and pass only when it is safe. Here, wait behind the turning car until it clears your lane.
