Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You approach an intersection that has no traffic signal and no painted crosswalk lines. A pedestrian is crossing the street that you are on and is about to step from the far half of the road into your half. What should you do?
A approaches a corner in the westbound lane. Pedestrian B is crossing northward from the far half of the road toward A’s half; the intersection has sidewalks but no signal or painted crosswalk lines.
Correct answer: Slow down or stop and yield, because the corner has an unmarked crosswalk.
Why
Many drivers look only for paint, but Rhode Island law presumes a crosswalk at every intersection, with or without painted markings, unless markings show otherwise. The Rhode Island manual also tells drivers to yield even when a pedestrian crosses carelessly. Slow down early when you approach a corner, so that a stop does not surprise the driver behind you.
