You plan to turn right from a narrow street onto a cross street. How should you position your car before and during the turn?
A approaches a four-way intersection on a narrow two-way street and plans to turn right. One lane runs each way on both streets. A is initially centered in its approach lane; no turn path is shown.
Correct answer: Keep as close as you safely can to the right curb, before and during the turn.
Why
Turning from the far right keeps other vehicles from coming between you and the curb, and it shows drivers behind you what you plan to do. The manual calls this lane position 3: 3 to 6 inches from the right line or curb. Signal early, yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk, and finish the turn in the right part of the new road.
