Freeways & High-Speed RoadsStandalone practice
You leave the interstate after an hour at 65 mph. On the exit ramp, 45 mph feels very slow, but the advisory speed for the ramp curve is 30 mph. What is this effect, and what should you do?
Correct answer: Velocitizing: check your speedometer and slow to the ramp speed.
Why
Your senses get used to high speed, so a speed that feels safe on a ramp can be much too fast for its curve. The manual suggests that you change your speed a little from time to time on long highway trips to reduce the effect. Begin to slow in the deceleration lane, not in the sharpest part of the curve.

You drive down an entrance ramp onto a freeway where traffic moves at about 60 mph. You reach the acceleration lane. How should you use it?Interstate traffic slows to a crawl. The breakdown lane on the right is empty, and your exit is half a mile ahead. What should you do?Your exit is about 1 mile ahead on the right, and you drive in the left lane of a freeway with three lanes in your direction. How should you prepare for the exit?In town at 30 mph, you keep a gap of about 130 feet to the car ahead, which is about 3 seconds at that speed. On the highway at 60 mph, you keep the same 130 feet. What is the problem?Your car breaks down on the interstate. You stop it in the breakdown lane, as far from traffic as you can, and you turn on the hazard flashers. You need help. What does the Rhode Island manual tell you to do next? You plan a 300-mile highway trip alone. How often does the Rhode Island manual recommend that you stop to rest?
