You are first in line at a steady red light, and you want to go straight. You stopped at the stop line, and no cross traffic is in sight. What must you do?
Blue car A is stopped behind the stop line at an empty intersection. An enlarged signal detail shows a steady circular red lamp; A intends to go straight.
Correct answer: Stay stopped at the line until the light turns green
Why
On a steady red light without a green arrow, Rhode Island allows only a right turn: after a full stop, when no sign prohibits it, and after you yield to pedestrians and traffic. You never have to turn right on red if you do not want to. A wait for the green keeps you out of the path of cross traffic, which can come faster than it looks.
