Your light turns steady red. A wide white stop line is painted across your lane a few feet before the crosswalk. The crosswalk is empty. Where must you stop?
A approaches a steady red signal, well before a white stop line. A marked empty crosswalk lies beyond the line and before the cross street.
Correct answer: Behind the white stop line, with no part of the car past it.
Why
For a steady red signal, Rhode Island law gives the stopping point in order: a clearly marked stop line first, the near side of the crosswalk if there is no stop line, and the edge of the intersection if there is neither. A stop line keeps your car out of the path of pedestrians and cross traffic. After you stop, stay stopped until a signal lets you go, or until you may turn right on red after you yield.
