On a multilane highway, a driver follows very close behind you and seems impatient. What does the Rhode Island manual tell you to do?
Silver B follows closely behind blue A in the left lane of a multilane highway. The card states that the following driver seems impatient. No lane-change path is shown.
Correct answer: Change lanes when it is safe, or let the other driver pass you.
Why
A tailgater has no time to stop if you slow down suddenly, so the safest plan is to let that driver go ahead of you. Rhode Island law requires a driver who is being passed to give way to the right and not to speed up until the other vehicle has passed. Do not react with anger: avoid eye contact and do not start a contest, because tailgating and blocking the passing lane have led to violence.
