You drive in the right lane of a highway with two lanes in your direction. Ahead, a tow truck with flashing lights is stopped on the right shoulder. The left lane is clear. What must you do?
A approaches tow truck B in the right lane of a two-lane highway. B is stopped on the right shoulder with an amber warning light, and the left lane is empty.
Correct answer: Move to the left lane when it is safe, and stay there until you pass.
Why
Tow truck operators, police officers and highway workers are often hit by passing traffic on the shoulder. If the road has only one lane in your direction, or traffic blocks a lane change, slow to a safe speed until you are past. The law also covers any vehicle that is stopped on the shoulder or in the breakdown lane.
