Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You wait behind a tractor-trailer at a red light in the right lane of a city street. The truck signals a right turn. When the light turns green, the truck moves forward, and a gap opens between the trailer and the curb. What should you do?
A is behind tractor-trailer B near an intersection. B has moved left across the dashed same-direction lane divider, opening space beside the curb. The green signal detail and card show that the light is green and B signals right.
Correct answer: Stay well back, and give the truck the extra room that it needs for its wide turn.
Why
The rear wheels of a long trailer follow a shorter path than the cab, so the trailer cuts toward the curb during a right turn. A driver who moves into the open space beside it can be trapped between the trailer and the curb. Wait until the truck has fully cleared the turn before you move up.
