Passing target: 20 correct signs and 20 correct rules
Your vehicle has entered an open roadside ditch. There is no hard obstacle in the downhill path. Which response follows SGI's advice for reducing rollover risk?
A car is on the slope of an open roadside ditch below the roadway, with no hard obstacle in its immediate downhill path.
Correct answer: Steer gently downhill, stay off the brake and ease off the gas.
Why
Avoid hard braking, violent steering or trying to climb back onto the road immediately. SGI advises holding the wheel firmly, looking and steering gently down the slope, staying off the brake and gradually releasing the accelerator. If an obstacle requires a steering adjustment, make it slowly and gradually; where there is a choice, favour the downhill direction. This guidance does not make every ditch safe or guarantee against rollover: approach roads and hard obstacles remain serious hazards. Needing a tow is preferable to forcing an unsafe return to the road.
