You brake hard on a wet road, and the rear of your car starts to slide to one side. What should you do?
Blue car A is angled on a wet two-way bend. A dark arrow beside its rear shows the rear sliding toward the right side of its original travel direction. No recovery path is drawn.
Correct answer: Release the brake, look where you want to go, and steer that way
Why
Skids happen when you drive too fast for the road, stop suddenly, or the tires can no longer grip the road. Once the car slides, you have little control, so the best defense is to slow down before the road gets slippery. The winter-driving part of the manual gives the same advice: take your foot off the gas and steer where you want the front of the car to go.
