Passing target: 80% (24/30)
Traffic on a four-lane highway slows to a crawl. The paved right shoulder is empty, and a driver ahead of you is using it to get to the next exit. What should you do?
A follows a slow line of cars on a four-lane two-way highway. D has moved onto the paved right shoulder to head toward the next exit, leaving open shoulder space beside A.
Correct answer: Stay in your lane, because the shoulder is only for emergency stops, even when it is paved.
Why
Stopped vehicles, people on foot and debris can be on the shoulder, and the people there do not expect moving traffic. In South Carolina law, the roadway does not include the shoulder (S.C. Code 56-5-460), and a pass on the right must not be made by driving off the roadway (S.C. Code 56-5-1850). Keep the shoulder for a real emergency.
