At 2 a.m., you stop for this light where two two-way streets cross. You want to go straight. You see no other vehicles or people. What must you do?
At a dark two-way intersection, A is stopped before the line and intends to go straight. The top red circle of the enlarged signal is steadily lit, and the card gives the time as 2 a.m.; no other road users are visible.
Correct answer: Stay stopped until the light turns green, even though no one else is there
Why
A red light protects cross traffic and people that you may not see, such as a car without lights or a person in dark clothes. The turn-on-red exception needs a full stop and a yield to pedestrians and other traffic first. Unless a police officer directs you, a car driver may not go straight on a steady red light.
