You see an open parallel parking space on the right side of the street. You check your mirrors, signal, and slow down. Where should you stop before you start to back into the space?
A approaches the open curb space between parked C behind and B in front. A has not yet selected its starting alignment.
Correct answer: Even with the car parked in front of the space, about 2 feet to its side
Why
A good parallel park depends on the right start position. From beside the car ahead, turn the wheels right and back slowly, then turn sharply left once you clear that car. When you finish, your car should sit within 12 inches of the curb and at least 2 feet from the cars in front and behind. Watch for traffic, pedestrians, and objects during each step.
