You park facing downhill on a street with a curb on your right. You set the parking brake and shift into park. Which way should you turn the front wheels?
Blue car A faces downhill beside a curb on its right. A small side-profile panel identifies the downward slope, without showing a selected steering angle.
Correct answer: Sharply to the right, toward the curb
Why
On any hill, the goal is that a rolling car moves away from traffic. South Dakota law requires you to set the brake and turn the front wheels to the curb or side of the road when you park on a grade. If your car has a manual transmission, the manual also says to leave it in reverse when you park facing downhill.
