Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive on an open highway at 60 mph, which is about one mile each minute. How far ahead should you try to look to plan your driving?
Blue car A travels right on an open highway. A separate, uniformly scaled overview of the same road shows A at the left with no scan endpoints or distance brackets.
Correct answer: About 20 to 30 seconds ahead, which is about one-third to one-half mile at this speed.
Why
When you look well down your path, you have time to change speed or position before a problem reaches you, so you avoid sudden braking or steering. It also helps the drivers behind you, because you slow down early and smoothly. Scan in a pattern (far ahead, to the sides and in the mirrors) and do not fix your eyes on one point. In a city you may not see as far, so adjust your speed and lane position to keep a clear view.
