Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive east on a two-lane highway. The center line is a pair of yellow lines. The line next to your lane is solid, and the line next to the westbound lane is broken. The road ahead is straight. Which drivers may cross the center line to pass when it is safe?
A goes east below the solid yellow line. B goes west above the broken yellow line on a straight two-way road.
Correct answer: Only the westbound drivers, because the broken line is on their side of the pair.
Why
When a solid line runs beside a broken line, read the line that is closest to your own lane. A broken line on your side allows a pass when the road ahead is clear, and a solid line on your side prohibits it. A straight road does not change the marking: the solid line can mark a hazard that you cannot see yet, such as a side road or a hill farther ahead.
