On a four-lane highway you see this flashing arrow panel ahead, with the arrow pointing left and orange ROAD WORK signs before it. You are in the right lane. What should you do?
Blue car A approaches in the right lane of a four-lane divided highway. Two orange ROAD WORK AHEAD signs stand before a trailer-mounted panel whose amber lamps form a left-pointing arrow. An enlarged detail repeats the same panel. The opposite roadway is empty, and no merge route is shown.
Correct answer: Begin to merge into the open left lane early, well before you reach the panel.
Why
Early merging keeps traffic moving and lowers the chance of rear-end crashes, the most common work zone crash. In the work zone, keep your lane, obey the posted speed, and watch for flaggers and workers. Near barrels, cones and barricades, stay in the middle of your lane, and turn on your headlights so that workers can see you.
