Licensing & Test ReadinessStandalone practice
Since January 1, 2026, the Tennessee knowledge test has included bicycle hand signals. You drive behind a bicyclist who holds the left arm out to the side, bent down at the elbow, with the palm to the rear. What does the rider tell you?
A close detail viewed from behind shows a left upper arm held out to the side, with the elbow bent down and the open palm facing back.
Correct answer: The rider will slow down or stop.
Why
A bicyclist uses hand signals to show a turn or a stop, because a bicycle usually has no signal lights. Tennessee law now requires the written test to include the bicycle signals for turning, slowing and stopping. When you follow a bicyclist, give plenty of room and be ready to stop quickly.
