You find an open space at the curb. If you park there, your front bumper will be about 5 feet from a fire hydrant. What should you do?
A proposed curb space places blue car A’s front bumper 5 feet from a fire hydrant.
Correct answer: Find another space, because 5 feet is too close to the hydrant.
Why
Fire crews must connect their hoses to a hydrant with no delay, so a parked car must leave a clear space around it. The manual tells drivers to stay 15 feet away. State law lets each town set its own hydrant distance from 7½ to 15 feet, so a car 15 feet or more from a hydrant is legal everywhere in Tennessee.
