Passing target: 70% (28/40)
You drive on a narrow city street with a posted speed limit of 20 mph and one lane in your direction. Ahead, an animal control officer's truck is stopped with approved warning lights flashing while the officer removes a dead dog from the road. What does Texas law require as you pass?
Correct answer: Slow to 5 mph or less while you pass the truck
Why
The move-over or slow-down law protects people who work next to traffic. Its list of vehicles now includes animal control vehicles and parking citation vehicles that show approved warning lights (since September 1, 2025), and also stopped garbage and recycling trucks at work and toll road vehicles. On a street with a posted limit under 25 mph, the slow-down choice means 5 mph or less. The Texas Driver Handbook does not list the newer vehicles yet, so follow the law.
