Your car's engine quits on a busy four-lane highway. The car stops in the right lane, and it will not restart or roll to the shoulder. What should you do?
Blue A is stationary in the westbound right travel lane of a four-lane highway. Three silver cars illustrate surrounding traffic. The white road edge, paved shoulder and off-road grass remain distinct. The card says that A cannot restart or roll to the shoulder; no occupants outside or response instruction appear.
Correct answer: Turn on the hazard lights, get everyone out, and move away from the road
Why
A car stopped in a travel lane is at high risk of a rear-end crash, and people who stay inside it or stand next to it can be hit. When you cannot move the car off the road, get everyone out and off the road, and warn traffic with hazard lights and portable warning devices. If the car can still roll, move it off the pavement first; a car with a flat tire can be driven slowly off the road.
