You follow a motorcycle at 40 mph on a dry, clear day. How much following time should you keep behind it?
Correct answer: At least 4 to 6 seconds
Why
A motorcycle can stop faster than a car on dry pavement, and even light contact can throw the rider off. The extra time gives you room to react if the rider brakes hard or moves around a hazard such as a pothole. When you stop behind a motorcycle at a light or crossing, leave about a full car length, so that a car that hits you from behind does not push you into the rider.
