Your light is green and you want to turn right. A pedestrian who started across on the WALK signal is still in the crosswalk that you must cross. The pedestrian signal now shows DON'T WALK. What should you do?
Blue A faces a green light and intends to turn right. A pedestrian is partway across the receiving street in the turn’s crosswalk. The fact card states that the pedestrian started on WALK and now faces DON’T WALK. No route or wait instruction appears.
Correct answer: Let the pedestrian finish, because the person started on WALK.
Why
DON'T WALK tells people on the curb not to start; it does not remove the right-of-way of a person who is already crossing. Older people, children and people with disabilities can need more time than the signal gives. Since September 1, 2025, Texas law gives the same protection to sidewalk users, such as people on bicycles or scooters who cross in the crosswalk.
