Passing target: 70% (28/40)
You come to a steady red light and want to turn right. There is no sign at the corner. No one is in the crosswalk, and the nearest car on the cross street is still about a block away. What should you do?
Blue A approaches a steady red light in the right lane. A white stop line precedes the empty crosswalk, and the right-turn receiving lane is clear. No turn-prohibition sign is present. A fact card says that the nearest cross traffic is about a block away, outside this close view.
Correct answer: Stop fully at the stop line, then turn with care while the cross traffic is still far away.
Why
A right turn on red is a permission, not a right-of-way: you stop first, and then you yield to everyone who is lawfully in the crosswalk or the intersection. Since September 1, 2025, Texas law also names "sidewalk users" in this rule: people on bicycles, scooters, skateboards or skates who come from the sidewalk into the crosswalk. Look for them and for pedestrians before you turn, because they can enter the crosswalk quickly.
