You drive in the left lane of a highway with a signal over each lane. The signal over your lane changes from a green arrow to a steady yellow X. The signals over the other lanes still show green arrows. What should you do?
Blue A is in the left of three highway lanes under a steady yellow X. The other lanes have green downward arrows. The card states that A’s control changed from a green arrow. No lane-change route or stopping action is shown.
Correct answer: Signal, and move to a lane with a green arrow as soon as you can do it safely.
Why
Lane-use signals work like a traffic light for each lane: a green arrow means the lane is open, a yellow X means get ready to leave, and a red X means the lane is closed. The yellow X gives you time to find a gap and change lanes without a sudden move. Signal, and check your mirrors and blind spot before you move over.
