Passing target: 70% (28/40)
At night on a dark two-lane road with a 55 mph limit, you drive at 50 mph. Your headlights show the road about 170 feet ahead. On dry pavement, a car needs about 229 feet to stop from 50 mph and about 164 feet from 40 mph. What should you do?
On a dark dry two-lane road, blue A travels at the stated 50 mph under a 55 mph limit. The calibrated headlight cone and bracket cover 170 feet ahead. The question card repeats the supplied 229-foot and 164-foot stopping figures without drawing either stopping range or selecting a speed.
Correct answer: Slow to about 40 mph or less, so that you can stop within the lit distance
Why
The manual tells you to drive at a speed at which you can stop within the distance that you can see, and at night that is the distance that your headlights light. Texas law also requires a speed that is reasonable and prudent and that lets you avoid a collision. When your stopping distance is longer than your sight distance, a hazard in the dark appears too late for you to stop.
