Passing target: 70% (28/40)
You drive in the left lane of a four-lane highway, next to a tractor-trailer in the right lane. Your exit is on the right, about a quarter mile ahead. What should you do?
Blue car A travels east in the left lane beside white tractor-trailer B in the right lane of a four-lane highway. The right exit is stated to be a quarter mile ahead, outside this close view. No manoeuvre or safe gap is selected.
Correct answer: Slow down, move in behind the truck, and exit only if you still have room
Why
A fully loaded tractor-trailer may need more than 400 feet to stop, compared with about 240 feet for a car at 55 mph. When you cut into the space in front of it and then slow down for a ramp, the truck driver has no room to stop. Plan your lane change early, and if you are beside a truck near your exit, it is safer to miss the exit than to cut in.
