You come to a stop sign. A white stop line is painted across your lane several feet before the corner. From the line, bushes block your view of the cross street. What should you do?
A approaches a STOP sign in the northbound lane. A is well behind a white stop line, which is before a marked crosswalk and the corner. A dense hedge at the left corner blocks the view from the line. No stopping position or route is marked.
Correct answer: Stop behind the line, then move up slowly to where you can see, and go only when it is clear.
Why
The stop line keeps your car out of the crosswalk and away from turning traffic. It is not always at the point with the best view, so a second, slow move forward may be necessary. If there is no stop line, stop before the crosswalk; if there is no crosswalk either, stop where you can see the cross traffic.
