Correct answer: C. A road joins ahead, and its traffic gets its own lane.
Why
The Added Lane sign warns that another road joins yours ahead and its traffic continues in its own added lane. Traffic does not have to merge. Stay in your lane and watch for vehicles in the new lane that may change lanes later. Do not confuse it with the Merge sign, where the curved line meets the main arrow and the two streams of traffic must merge into one lane.
Why the other answers are not correct
- A. Wrong: a lane that ends is shown by the Lane Ends sign; this sign shows a lane that is added.
- B. Wrong: the Merge sign shows that traffic must merge; this sign is used where no merge is required.
- D. Wrong: a divided highway ahead is shown by a different sign, with lanes that split around a median.
