Sam is 19 and has a Utah learner permit. He wants to practice driving today. Which person can supervise him?
Correct answer: His friend, age 23, a licensed driver, in the front passenger seat
Why
Utah has different supervisor rules for learners under 18 and for adult learners. An adult learner can practice with any licensed driver who is 21 or older and who sits in the seat beside the learner. A learner under 18 needs an approved driving instructor, a licensed parent or legal guardian (a stepparent or foster parent counts as a parent), a licensed responsible adult who signed for the permit, or a licensed adult age 21 or older with written permission when the parent or guardian has no license.
