You borrow a small utility trailer and connect it to your SUV with a ball hitch. The trailer has a light cable and two safety chains. What must you do with the chains?
A close view shows a trailer coupler on a ball hitch. A separate card lists a light cable and two safety chains supplied with the trailer; the wider chain attachment points are outside the close view.
Correct answer: Hook them securely to the frame of the SUV, with only enough slack for turns
Why
If the hitch comes apart at highway speed, the safety chains keep the trailer behind your vehicle instead of letting it cross into other lanes. The chains must also be attached so that the front of the trailer does not drop to the ground. Before each trip, check the hitch, the chains and the trailer lights.
