A police officer stops you and asks for proof of insurance for the car. Your insurance card is at home, but your insurer's app on your phone shows your current policy. What does Utah law allow?
Correct answer: You may show the proof of insurance electronically on your phone screen
Why
Utah's Financial Responsibility Act requires insurance for the vehicle or the driver. Driving without insurance can lead to the loss of your driver license, registration and license plates, and a conviction requires you to carry an SR22 for three years. If you get a citation because you could not show proof, you can later send the court proof that you were insured on that date, but this is only a defense and does not replace proof in the vehicle.
