Maya is 17 and has had her driver license for a year. While she drives, a friend calls her. Her phone is paired with the car, so she could answer with a voice command and keep both hands on the wheel. What does Utah law say?
Correct answer: She may not answer, because a driver under 18 may not use a phone to talk with a friend
Why
A phone call takes a new driver's attention away from the road, even when the phone is hands-free. For this reason, Utah law is stricter for drivers younger than 18 than for adults. At 18 and older, a driver may talk on a phone with voice commands, but no driver may manually text, dial or read messages while the vehicle moves, except to deal with an emergency, a safety hazard or a crime. If a friend calls, let the call go to voicemail, and call back after you park in a safe place.
