Passing target: 80% (16/20)
You are on the interstate and want to move from the right lane to the left lane to pass. Your inside mirror and your left side mirror show no vehicles. What should you do before you move over?
A travels in the right lane of a two-lane same-direction road. The left lane is empty in the diagram; no blind-spot area or lane-change route is highlighted.
Correct answer: Signal, look over your left shoulder at the blind spot, and move over if it is clear.
Why
Every vehicle has blind spots: areas beside and just behind it that the mirrors do not show. Before you change lanes or pass, check your mirrors, signal, and then take a quick look over your shoulder in the direction that you will move. Vermont law allows you to leave your lane only after you make sure that the move is safe, and a signal is required before a lane change. The manual lists a failure to check mirrors and blind spots as a common cause of crashes.
