Passing target: 80% (16/20)
Snow covers the road, and you are driving an all-wheel-drive SUV behind another car. How much following distance should you keep?
Blue SUV A follows silver car B on a snow-covered two-lane road. No time bracket or target gap appears in the question image.
Correct answer: More than four seconds, because every vehicle needs more distance to stop on snow.
Why
The four-second gap is the minimum for a normal road. On snow, ice, wet or slippery roads, or when you cannot see well, braking distances get much longer, so keep more than four seconds. All-wheel drive can help you get moving in snow, but it does not help you stop on ice, and it can make a driver overconfident. Vermont law also says that a safe following distance must take the speed, the traffic and the road conditions into account.
