You are about to drive out of a store driveway onto a busy street. A sidewalk crosses the driveway just before the street. What does Vermont law require?
A approaches from a store driveway beneath the road. A continuous sidewalk crosses the driveway before the two-way street, where traffic approaches from both directions.
Correct answer: Stop before the sidewalk, yield to anyone on it, then yield to all traffic on the street.
Why
A driver who comes out of a driveway, alley, parking lot or private road must let everyone already on the road go first. Vermont law also requires a full stop before you drive onto a sidewalk area, so that pedestrians, including children, are safe. After that stop, wait for a safe gap in the traffic from both directions. The manual also tells you to watch for pedestrians whenever you cross a sidewalk or a road shoulder.
