Passing target: 85% (34/40)
You drive in the right lane of a highway with two lanes in your direction. A police car with flashing lights is stopped on the right shoulder ahead. The left lane is full of cars next to you, so you cannot move over safely. What should you do?
A is in the right lane of a highway. Three cars fill the left lane beside A; a police vehicle is stopped fully on the right shoulder ahead.
Correct answer: Stay in your lane, slow to a safe speed and pass with caution
Why
When it is safe, the first choice is to move to a lane that is not next to the stopped vehicle. The rule covers stopped emergency vehicles and tow trucks with flashing lights, and also stopped vehicles with hazard flashers, caution signs or lit flares. It does not apply in a highway work zone.
