Passing target: 85% (34/40)
You drive in the left lane of a street with two lanes in your direction. Ahead, a car in the right lane stops just before a marked crosswalk. You do not see anyone in the crosswalk. What should you do?
A approaches in the left of two eastbound lanes. B has stopped in the right lane just before a crosswalk. No pedestrian is shown in the question.
Correct answer: Stop, and do not pass the stopped car until you know no one is crossing
Why
Virginia law prohibits a driver in the next lane, or behind a vehicle that is stopped for a pedestrian, from passing that vehicle. The manual also lists this case among the places where passing is unlawful. Treat any car that stops at a crosswalk as a warning that a person may be crossing.
