Turns, Lanes, Passing & MergingStandalone practice
You drive on a highway with two lanes in your direction and want to move into the other lane. In which order should you do these steps?
A drives in one of two same-direction highway lanes and plans to use the other lane.
Correct answer: Check your mirrors, signal, glance over your shoulder, then move over
Why
The signal must come before the move, so that other drivers can react in time. On a road with three or more lanes, also look for a driver in the far lane who may move into the same lane. Virginia law says that you must not leave your lane until you know that the move is safe (§ 46.2-804). Turn off the signal after the lane change.
